If you’re planning to order an electric vehicle (EV), you’ll first need to check if your home meets the requirements to install a charger.

Not all of our homes are eligible for an electric vehicle charging point (EVCP).

Getting permission

To be considered, your home must have its own private driveway, directly connected to your home.

If you have a parking space or driveway next to your home, which may be separated by a communal path, we can check to see if permission is possible as long as it doesn’t cross someone else’s property.

If your home doesn’t meet these conditions, we can’t give you permission to install an EVCP. For example, if you have communal parking, no off-street parking, or a shared driveway.

How to apply

If you meet the conditions, you can apply online by filling in our customer alterations application form. Make sure you include any relevant documents to avoid delays.

Applications can take up to 12 weeks for a decision to be made.

If you’re approved, the charger must be installed by an accredited professional who can provide an electrical safety certificate.

Looking ahead

We know electric cars are the future, and we’re working on ways to allow chargers in more types of homes. For now, if your home isn’t eligible, we encourage you to check with your local council for other charging options.

Is your property over 12 months old? (We cannot allow changes to new build properties as this could affect the defect liability period or NHBC warranty).

Are you going to carry out the works within the next 6 months? (Our permissions are only valid for 12 months once granted, so any your works should be actioned immediately after getting permission).

Are the works only to your private home? (We can't allow works to any communal areas. They are maintained by us and for the use and benefit of all customers).

Have you researched what other permissions you require? (For example, planning permission or building control approval).
