In November 2024 we began work to replace the water pipes at around 60 of our homes in Bourton-on-the-Water after routine sampling by Thames Water detected higher than usual levels of lead in customers' water supply.
Background and history
How long have we known there are lead pipes connecting our homes to Thames Water's communications pipes?
We do not hold information about the water supply pipes which run from our homes to the water company's communications pipes. When lead pipes are identified we will replace them.
Why has it taken until now for the pipes to be replaced?
The safety standards for water in the UK are set by the UK Water Supply Regulations. Water companies carry out regular safety and quality water sampling in homes across the country every year. When samples are found to contain higher levels of lead in the water supply, the water company will replace their communication pipe and the property owner is responsible for replacing the supply pipe which runs from their home to the communication pipe.
How many Bromford properties are affected?
Thames Water has identified around 150 properties in Bourton-on-the-Water affected by this issue. We own just over 60 of these.
Replacing our supply pipes
Who is going to replace the pipes to Bromford's homes?
We have engaged an existing, trusted contractor, Severn Trent Services, to undertake the work on our behalf.
Will Bromford customers have to pay for the work to replace the pipes?
No, our customers will not have to make any payment for this work.
When the replacement work start?
Preliminary work began during the week of 18 November, the first work to replace the pipes will begin during the week of 25 November.
How long will the replacement work take?
We aren't sure and are working with Severn Trent Services to calculate the estimated timescales, which might be impacted by local issues. We will keep customers updated with more information as we receive it and will update this page.
Will customers be told when the pipework to their home is being replaced?
Yes, your neighbourhood coach will make sure you're aware.
Will customers need to be home when the work is carried out?
Yes, you'll need to be home to allow the final connection of the replaced pipe to the pipes in your home. We'll make sure we give you notice of when this will be.
Once the pipes have been replaced will the water be tested again before we drink it?
We are in close contact with Thames Water and will be guided by them about the need for any further testing.
Will you be replacing the pipes of homeowners who bought their property from Bromford?
No, we will only be replacing the pipework which runs to our homes.
Homeowners are responsible for the pipes on their properties, including internal pipes and the underground supply pipe which connects their home to the water company's communication pipe.
Replacement water supply
Who will provide water to customers who have been told not to drink water from their taps?
Thames Water is responsible for providing customers with bottled water until it has replaced the communication pipes that provide water to your home. At that point, if we have not already replaced our connecting pipework, we will provided you with bottled water free of charge.
Who will cover the increase to my water bills caused by customers having to run their taps for 2 - 3 minutes before being used?
If you are not on a water meter the volume of water you use does not impact your bill.
If you are on a water meter and have additional costs, please let your neighbourhood coach know and we will review what help we can provide.
