It is important to recognise the dangers associated with opening windows, particularly the risk of falls if safety devices are not used correctly or if safety regimes are lacking in the home. This risk is especially significant when young children are present.

Familiarise yourself with the windows in your home, including the safety devices that are installed. The following information outlines key steps you can take to maintain window safety, protect young children, and keep your windows in good working order.

Window restrictors are safety devices that limit the opening of windows to 10cm (4 inches) unless manually released.

All windows on the 1st floor and above should be fitted with window restrictors, except small top-opening windows. When opening windows for ventilation, always ensure the restrictor is securely in place to prevent accidental falls, which could be life-saving.

If you need to open the window beyond the restricted position for ventilation or cleaning, re-engage the restrictors as soon as you finish, ensuring they are properly positioned. For windows with key lockable handles, always lock them after closing.

To protect young children in your home or visiting, follow these safety steps:

  • Never leave children unsupervised in rooms with open windows
  • Regularly remind everyone at home about the dangers of open windows
  • Discuss window safety with other household members, older children, and visitors, and agree on how to maintain safety for young children
  • Keep windows closed using the handle, and lock them if your windows have key locks
  • Store keys out of reach of children but in an accessible place for emergencies
  • Avoid placing beds or furniture beneath opening windows. If unavoidable, ensure restrictors are always engaged
  • Keep toys and objects that may attract children away from windows
  • For ventilation, use windows that are out of children's reach, and double-check that restrictors are secure and functioning

To avoid accidents while cleaning windows:

  • Stand firmly on the floor and avoid standing on chairs or stepladders.
  • Do not overreach or lean out of the window, keep both feet on the ground.
  • Never lean against the glass.
  • Avoid sitting or standing on the window sill or ledge.
  • If your window reverses inward for cleaning, ensure it is securely in position before you begin and always re-engage the restrictors afterwards.

Do not paint over UPVC windows, especially the handles, hinges, and restrictors, as this may prevent them from working properly.
