The Government body tasked with improving the nation’s health says that millions of adults are failing to achieve just 10 minutes of continuous walking per month.
Public Health England (PHE) has compiled figures which show over 6.3 million adults aged 40 to 60 are not managing to register at least 10 minutes of continuous brisk walking each month. Health bosses say this physical inactivity directly contributes to one in six deaths in the UK.
PHE also cited evidence that doing at least one, brisk, ten-minute walk a day reduces the risk of early death by 15%, while the chief medical officer’s recommends 150 minutes of “moderate to vigorous exercise” a week.
In response to the findings, the health body has released a new app called Active 10 which is aiming to encourage more people than ever to reach their daily and monthly activity targets as well as tracking progress over a period of time.
