We're planning to start work on a new affordable housing development in Worcestershire this autumn.

Last month we completed a deal to purchase a 4.8 acre site in Hallow near Worcester and now we're getting ready to start work on the 40 new homes in September. We're going to make 24 of the homes available for social rent, with the remaining 16 available through our part-rent part-buy shared ownership scheme. The development, which was granted permission by a Government planning inspector in November 2023, will be a mix of two-, three- and four-bedroom houses and one- and two-bedroom bungalows and maisonettes.

The homes will be built by our in-house construction team utilising timber frame construction methods. The development will be part financed by funding from our strategic partnership with Homes England. We were named a Homes England strategic partner in 2021 and awarded £240m to aid the construction of affordable housing across the West Midlands and West of England.

Duncan Melville, senior land manager at Bromford, said: “Worcestershire is a key area for strategic growth so we are delighted to have completed the purchase of this land, which will provide 40 affordable homes for rent and home ownership in 2025. It’s an oven-ready deal for us which will allow us to start work on site in just a few months’ time and I’d like to thank our partners Braemar Midlands Ltd and Michael D Bailey & Associates for their support in completing this deal.

“According to that National Housing Federation1, house prices in Malvern Hills are 11 times higher than average incomes so we know there is a need for genuinely affordable housing in the area. And people with a local connection will be given priority when it comes to applying to rent or buy one of these homes when they’re completed next year.”

Already in 2024 we have completed deals for land which will allow it to build more than 600 new homes over the coming years.

Gary Belcher, land director at Bromford added: “The deal for this land at Hallow, which was completed in just a few months, shows our appetite to acquire land on which we can build more affordable homes. We will be pursuing further opportunities to secure more land so we can meet our ambitions of building a further 11,000 new homes by 2032 and to increase the number of homes we build ourselves.”

We are one of the country’s biggest developers of affordable housing2 and completed 1,200 homes for rent and shared ownership in the past year. We own more than 47,000 homes, including more than 1,600 homes across Worcestershire.
