At Bromford, we understand that a home is more than just a roof over your head; it’s the foundation that enables our customers to thrive. We are committed to supporting customers with mobility challenges by providing adapted homes that empower individuals and families to live fulfilling lives.

We aim to make the best use of homes and provide thoughtful adaptions to meet the unique needs of our customers. Our teams work with local authorities, Adult Social Care and other organisations to find households in need. This collaborative approach ensures that those who need adapted homes can live safely, independently, and with dignity.

The story of Latoya Burke and her daughter JoJo, a vibrant and energetic young girl with unique mobility needs, is a heartwarming demonstration of our commitment to providing customers with adapted homes to meet their specific needs.

Latoya and JoJo’s Story

Latoya and JoJo’s experience is a powerful example of how tailored housing solutions can transform lives – one that reflects our dedication to helping our customers thrive.

The family’s previous home was unsuitable, presenting daily challenges that impacted the entire family. From navigating the house to accessing essential facilities, these difficulties heightened stress and limited JoJo and the rest of the family's independence.

After being nominated by Swindon Borough Council through the choice-based lettings system, our team worked closely with Latoya and local authorities to understand the specific needs of her family. In a swift process, we provided a new purpose-built wheelchair adapted home designed to support JoJo’s needs and enhance the family’s wellbeing.

The new adapted home includes key features designed to improve accessibility, such as ramps, widened doorways, and a wheelchair lift. These additions allow JoJo to move freely and safely throughout the house.

To promote independence, the home is fitted with easily accessible light switches, adapted bathrooms, and a dedicated bedroom for JoJo empowering her to perform daily tasks on her own. The inclusion of wet rooms on both floors with wheelchair accessible low-rise sinks, allow JoJo to use bathroom facilities in a manner that respects her privacy and dignity.

The kitchen features a rise-and-fall countertop, adjustable sink, and low-rise oven, enabling JoJo to actively participate in cooking and cleaning alongside her family.

Empowering independence

Since moving into their new home, Latoya’s family has experienced a remarkably positive transformation. JoJo now enjoys a greater sense of independence, confidently moving around the home and performing daily tasks with ease.

Reflecting on the positive changes brought by their new home, Latoya shares: "It has been life-changing, really. The support from Bromford has given us a home where JoJo can be independent, and we can all live more comfortably and happily. Moving into our new home was such an emotional experience. We now have much more space which means we can host friends and broadens our family time. The adapted features make everyday tasks so much easier for JoJo and have reduced our stress significantly.

“Bromford has transformed our lives, and we are incredibly grateful for their dedication and support. I wish more housing associations provided adapted homes for families in our situation, as it makes such a huge difference in our quality of life."

Latoya’s story highlights our commitment to providing homes that cater to the diverse needs of our customers to help them thrive and lead more independent and fulfilling lives. The family’s new adapted home has significantly improved JoJo’s quality of life and provided the family with peace, comfort, and a sense of normality.
