A block of 50 new affordable apartments is being built in Bristol thanks to a new partnership.

We're working with Firmstone Developments to build apartments on the site of the former Argos store in East Street, Bedminster. The finished one-and two-bedroom apartments will be a mix of tenures when completed, with 30 homes available for social rent and the other 20 homes available to part-rent, part-buy through our shared ownership scheme. The completed development will also include a new retail unit which will open onto East Street.

Head of development Wyn Bevan said: “We’re delighted to be working with Firmstone on this exciting development to regenerate this part of the city and provide more affordable homes in Bedminster. Thanks to the funding we’ve secured through our strategic partnership with Homes England, we’re able to provide all of the apartments for either social rent or low-cost home ownership. Work is already underway and we’re looking forward to welcoming customers into their new homes next summer.

“We’re already the biggest housing association in South Gloucestershire and know there’s a lot of demand for more affordable housing in Bristol so have been looking for more opportunities to develop homes in the city. We’ve recently completed 26 homes at Leicester Street and will shortly be finalising a contract for a further 21 affordable homes in Bedminster.”

Firmstone secured planning permission for the new homes at the East Street site in 2021 and completed the demolition of the previous building last year.

We are one of England’s biggest housebuilding housing associations and for the past two years have been the biggest builder of social rent homes in the country.
